Vinyl Siding Maintenance: The Dos and Don’ts

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular siding materials that homeowners choose for their homes. This is because it’s affordable, durable and low-maintenance. However, just because it’s low-maintenance, it doesn’t mean that you no longer have to care for it. Just keep these tips in mind.

In this post, roofing pros from Patriot Roofing discuss the dos and don’ts that accompany vinyl siding maintenance.

Do: Regularly Clean It

Your siding can last longer if you give it an annual cleaning that removes dirt and debris. Consider cleaning your siding during the spring or summer when storms aren’t much of a problem.

Don’t: Let Shrubbery Be Overgrown

While vinyl is resistant to rot, it is possible for it to crack or puncture when plants grow against it. With that in mind, avoid letting your nearby trees and shrubs to overgrow by keeping them neatly trimmed at all times.

Do: Use The Right Cleaning Solution

When cleaning your siding, always make sure you’re using the correct cleaning solution to avoid damage. For the best results, use a mixture of laundry soap or trisodium phosphate with warm water. Aim your hose downward to prevent the water from going between the slats as this could lead to mold growth and water damage.

Don’t: Repaint on Your Own

As much as possible avoid repainting your vinyl siding on your own as the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and coated with primer first before any paint can be applied. Since it can be a complex task, it’s always best you leave it to a siding and roof repair professional, such as Patriot Roofing.

Do: Use The Correct Tools

There’s no harm in using a regular hose to remove the grime in your siding. However, a pressure washer can do that job better. Just make sure to avoid using a high setting as it can damage your vinyl siding. Once again, hiring a professional to do the job for you is also an option.

Don’t: Allow Dirt to Stay Long

On the other hand, if you spot dirt, algae, or grime on your siding, clean it immediately. That way, you can make your vinyl siding last for as long as possible.
