Post-Storm Alertness: The Hidden Signs of Storm Damage

When a particularly strong storm hits your area and has passed, it’s important that you check the condition of your roofing system as soon as you can. This is because storms can cause major damage to your roofing system and while some can easily be spotted, there are a few that are so difficult to see from ground level that they’re practically hidden.

In this post, roof repair experts from Patriot Roofing LLC discusses the hidden signs of storm damage that every homeowner should look out for.

Hail Damage

Believe it or not, hail damage isn’t always easily spotted. Most homeowners think that hail damage takes the form of a hole or dent in the shingle but this is actually a misconception. Depending on what type of roof you have, the damage caused by hail may differ and may not always easy to see. Therefore, once the hail storm in your area is over, make sure to have an expert inspect your roof to see how bad the damage is.

Granule Loss

On the other hand, if your home has asphalt shingles in the roofing system, one form of damage you’ll have to be concerned with is granule loss. The asphalt granules of your roof is an important component of the roofing system since it blocks UV rays and reduces heat build-up. Unfortunately, a strong storm can cause these granules to loosen and fall into your gutters and drain spout, leaving your shingles (and therefore, your home) vulnerable and exposed to the elements.

Dented Gutters

Small dents on your gutter system should be avoided as much as possible. Not only will it cause your gutters to perform poorly but if another storm rolls in your area, it won’t be able to protect your home from the downpour. This can pose a huge problem for you as your foundation and roofing system can easily affected by the water. With that in mind, always make sure to have your gutters checked by a gutter installation expert after a storm.

Minor Holes and Leaks

Minor holes and leaks are storm damage that won’t be spotted easily by the untrained eye and if left unchecked, they can cause major damage to your home, such as leaks and a rotten roof deck. Therefore, always call a roofer to inspect your roof after a storm as soon as possible. That way, any issues can be taken care of before they become too much of a problem.
