Pros and Cons of Using the Insurance-Referred Contractor

Insurance policies can be a great help for any homeowner when they need to get a roof repair or replacement project done. Unfortunately, some homeowners are wary that using their insurance for such a project means that they’ll need to use the company-referred contractor.

According to the industry, you don’t necessarily need to work with the insurance-referred contractor so long as they don’t have a “right to repair” clause. Despite the current rarity of this clause, however, it’s still best that you know the advantages and disadvantages of working with a company-provided contractor.

In this article, Patriot Roofing LLC discusses the pros and cons of working with the insurance-referred contractor.

Pros: Savings

If you work with an insurance-referred contractor on your roofing project, there’s a chance that you might be able to save a significant amount on your insurance premiums. This is because by doing so, the insurance company will be able to save money by repairing or replacing your property for less. The money saved here can be passed to you in the form of a lower premium.

Cons: Narrow Scope of Work

One disadvantage that may come with working with an insurance-referred contractor is that the scope of work for your home might be inappropriately narrow. This is because the insurer themselves instead of a contractor will determine the scope of replacement or repair work, making this a likely occurrence in order for the insurer to save on costs.

Pros: Vetted Contractor

On the other hand, if you work with an insurance-referred contractor, you can be assured that the contractor is qualified as they have already been vetted by the insurance company itself. If the work happens to be incomplete or inadequate, however, the insurer themselves will guarantee the contractor’s work to remediate it.

Cons: Contractor Will Accept Insurer’s Scope of Work

Unfortunately, if you work with an insurer-referred contractor, it’s more likely that they’ll accept the insurer’s narrow scope of work, even if they do disagree with their assessment. This is because they’ll want to continue to receive additional work from the insurer, making it less likely that they’ll oppose the narrow assessment.
