4 Roofing Problems Caused by Poor Attic Ventilation

Several widespread roofing issues stem from inadequate attic ventilation, which is a more common problem than you think. According to the American Institute of Architects, roughly 90% of households in the country have this problem. Without adequate attic ventilation, several roofing issues might start to emerge, such as:

1. Mold and Mildew

Leaks aren’t the only way moisture can infiltrate your interior. Don’t forget that moisture can enter through the air flowing through your home as well. The warmer the air is, the more moisture it holds.

In a well-ventilated roofing system or attic, the air’s moisture content shouldn’t be a problem—cooler air from outside enters through intake vents and pushes warmer indoor air out through the exhaust vents. However, if there aren’t enough exhaust vents, moisture will accumulate in your attic, creating a damp environment that’s a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Left unattended, mold can eat away at organic material, like wood, and affect other parts of your home.

2. Spongy Decking

Your home’s decking, the base of your roof, might absorb excess moisture, weakening the adhesives holding your deck together and causing sections of your roof decking to sag.

3. Increased Strain on HVAC Systems

Since warmer, more humid air remains trapped in your home, your HVAC system will need to work harder to keep indoor temperatures at a comfortable level. The increased strain on your HVAC system can in turn shorten its lifespan, causing more frequent breakdowns.

4. Ice Dams

In winter, warm, humid air in your attic might melt the snow on top of your roof. As melted snow slides down your roof, it freezes, depositing ice on the edges and forming ice dams. Ice dams prevent water from flowing to your gutters, increasing the risk of moisture damage. To prevent ice dams, aside from making sure your attic has adequate ventilation, it’d be a good idea to have a gutter installation contractor inspect your gutters as well.
