What a BBB® A+ Rating Means for Customers

It’s a given that you need to do your research before hiring a contractor. Learning about a  roofing contractor’s qualifications should be easy enough—all you need to do is check their certifications. Evaluating their reputation, on the other hand, isn’t as straightforward. You’ll need to skim through dozens of online reviews and ask previous customers about their experience.

Fortunately, there’s an easier and more objective way of gauging a contractor’s reputation: Look for a rating from the Better Business Bureau® (BBB).  An A rating is the highest rating a company can get. What makes a BBB rating a good measure of a contractor’s reputation or trustworthiness?

The Basis for the BBB Rating System

For one thing, the level of customer service a contractor provides is given a significant weighting. The BBB, a private nonprofit that’s focused on advancing marketplace trust, bases the ratings on a total of 13 factors, which include:

  • The number of complaints received about the contractor – The volume of complaints, as well as the number of complaints that were resolved or remain unresolved, gives you a good idea of the level of customer service a contractor provides. Other factors such as an emerging pattern of complaints will be taken into account as well.

  • Experience in the industry – The said criteria for gauging the level of customer service favors newer, less experienced contractors. After all, companies that are just starting out tend to have fewer customers and therefore receive fewer complaints. That’s why the total amount of time a company has been in the industry will be factored in as well.

What’s Need to Receive an A Rating

To receive an A rating, a contractor has to get a score of 97 out of 100, which requires a near-perfect score in all 13 categories. As such, if you need to have roof repair work done, you can expect quality service from an A-rated contractor.
