How To Deal With Siding Storm Damage

Since your siding is the largest part of your exterior, it’s the part that’s most likely to have been damaged during a storm. That’s why it would be a good idea to do a quick visual inspection of your siding and  roofing  system from ground level once it’s safe to go outside. 

Here are the warning signs of siding storm damage to keep an eye out for:

  • Cracks  – Check if there are any half-circle cracks between the valley and ridges of the siding panels
  • Dents and chipped paint  – Wind-driven debris might have knocked pieces of your siding off or left behind a few dents. Don’t forget to inspect your siding for any signs of chipped paint. If the paint on your siding was scratched, you need to apply a fresh coat of paint over the exposed parts as soon as possible. 
  • Holes  – In severe cases, large pieces of wind-debris debris might have punched several holes in your siding. 

Here’s an inspection tip: Mid-day isn’t the best time to conduct a visual inspection. That’s because the glare might be hiding signs of siding damage. 

Take Pictures of Storm Damage 

Don’t forget to take pictures of the siding damage. If you have insurance, you’ll need to submit these when you file a claim with your insurer.  

What if you haven’t found any signs of storm damage? Certain types of siding are more resistant to storm damage than others. But, as a rule of thumb, you should have a roofing contractor inspect your exterior after a storm. Remember: No matter how durable your roof and siding are, they’re likely to have been damaged during an extreme weather event. The sooner storm damage is detected and siding and  roof repair  finished, the better.
