Common Myths About Asphalt Shingle Roofs Debunked

If you’re looking for durable and reliable roofing material, you can never go wrong with asphalt shingles. They withstand extreme weather conditions and protect the building’s occupants from debris and dirt. However, there is plenty of misinformation about asphalt shingles, discouraging homeowners from enjoying their numerous benefits.

To help you separate fact from fiction, Patriot Roofing LLC debunks some common myths you might have heard about asphalt shingle roofs.

Myth #1: Asphalt Shingles Have Asbestos

Years ago, many manufacturers used fire-resistant components that contained asbestos fibers within the shingles. Eventually, asbestos was phased out in the 1960s because of associated health risks. Nevertheless, if your home was built between the 1950s and the 1980s, you may want to let your roofer know. Some of the old materials in your roof may need to be tested for asbestos content.

Myth #2: Dark Asphalt Shingle Roofs Increase Your Energy Bills

Light-colored asphalt shingle roofs are reflective, which means they reduce radiant heat that the roof might absorb. Thus, many homeowners believe that dark shingles absorb heat and make your home hotter, leading to higher air-conditioning bills. While it’s true that darker shingles absorb heat, they can’t make your home hotter. Roof ventilation and attic insulation can help prevent excess heat from entering your home. With these, a dark-colored roof can be as cool as a light-colored roof.

Myth #3: Asphalt Shingle Adhesives Cure Immediately

Adhesives on asphalt shingles improve resistance to weather conditions, especially windstorms. Some adhesives may cure instantly, while others, such as those used on asphalt shingles, require solar heat. Keep in mind that the sealant on shingles doesn’t work like a peel-and-stick material. It’s also important to remember that the time it takes to activate the seal depends upon many factors. This includes the home’s location, the roof’s direction and the climate conditions. For this reason, it may take a few days for the adhesive to cure after installation.

Myth #4: All Asphalt Shingles Are Created Equal

There’s a common belief that all asphalt shingles look cheap, plain and unappealing. That is why some homeowners hesitate to install them. However, asphalt shingles are not created equal. They come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and protection levels. In fact, asphalt shingles are the most customizable roof material. When it comes to asphalt shingles, you can make your exterior look unique and stand out in the neighborhood.
