3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules: Features and Benefits

The 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules are a new type of asphalt shingle granule developed by multinational manufacturer 3M. In this blog, roofing and  gutter installation  contractor Patriot Roofing LLC discusses the features and benefits of this type of asphalt shingle granule, and how it can benefit the environment.

3M Smog-Reducing Granules

3M Smog-reducing Granules are designed to minimize smog pollution by mitigating the nitrogen oxides (NOx) found in smog. 3M Smog-reducing Granules feature base minerals with a photocatalytic coating. When activated by ultraviolet radiation from the sun, the granules generate radicals that transform nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions that wash away over time. A home that has roofing with 3M Smog-reducing Granules can help contribute to cleaner air in their area.

Smart Design

Creating smog-reducing properties at the granule level signifies smart design. In fact, it has been named by  TIME Magazine  as one of the Best Inventions of 2018. Instead of relying on coatings or feature-specific product lines, 3M Smog-reducing Granules can be added to any existing asphalt shingle product during manufacture. It can be blended with any granule color, as well as specialty features like algae-killing properties and “cool roof” reflectivity.  Roofing  manufacturer Malarkey Roofing Products® has since begun incorporating 3M Smog-reducing Granules into their products, starting with their Highlander® NEX™ roofing shingles.

Why Do You Need to Reduce Smog?

Smog is a portmanteau of “smoke” and “fog,” composed of nitrogen oxides from car exhaust, coal power plants, and factory emissions. Combined with volatile organic compounds reacting to ultraviolet radiation, they form a fog-like formation that hangs in the air. When close to the ground, smog has various negative effects on human health, causing damage to lung tissue and eye irritation. It can also kill plants. A roofing product that contains 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules can contribute to reducing these pollutants. Imagine: if enough homes have the same type of roofing in the same area, it could result in a virtually smog-free environment.
