The 4 Reasons You Should Remove Your Old Underlayment




When it comes to replacing your roofing system, it’s important that you make sure your roofer doesn’t take a shortcut. One of the shortcuts that they often take is leaving the old underlayment. With that in mind, you should take the necessary steps to make sure the old underlayment is removed and replaced with a new one.

In this post, Patriot Roofing discusses the four reasons you should remove your roof’s old underlayment.

  1. Replacement – If you have to replace your shingles, it’s always likely that the old underlayment will need to be replaced as well, especially if your roof has some years behind it. This is because if that is indeed the case, the old underlayment will likely be made of felt material and won’t be as durable as current materials.

  1. Warranty – Your warranty is another important reason why your roof’s old underlayment should be removed and replaced. Warranties can help you cover the costs of your roof repair but some shingle warranties can be voided if the shingle isn’t installed according to the specifics given by the manufacturers.

  1. Proper Inspection – During the replacement or repair process, the roof decking will have to be inspected properly for various damages, such as mold and rot, in order to be stamped out immediately. However, the only way for a proper inspection to be carried out is through the removal of the old underlayment. 

  1. Insurance Claims –  On the other hand, your homeowners insurance policy can help you recoup the amount that you lost during the roofing project if you file the proper claims. However, most insurance providers will only agree to a payout if it was proven that the project was done right or you were proactive in maintaining your roofing system.
