Signs That Your Downspouts Are Clogged

Clogged downspouts can turn into a serious problem if you ignore them for a long time. Water can back up and find its way into your foundation, creating a potential threat to your home’s structural integrity.

In this post, roof and  gutter installation  expert Patriot Roofing LLC lists some of the most common signs that will tell you your downspouts are clogged.

Water Pooling Around the Downspout Connection

Downspouts are connected to underground drains using adapters. These adapters come in different shapes and sizes, and they’re designed to seamlessly transition one size of pipe to another. Water shouldn’t be leaking out of the downspouts as it flows through these adapters.

If you notice water spilling out every time it rains, you probably have the wrong downspout adapter or the drain is clogged. You can check the bottom of your downspouts to see if the clog is in the drains or in the downspouts. Typically, when underground drains are clogged, water gushes back out and spills out of the adapter seams, causing water pooling in these areas.

Overflowing Gutters

Sometimes you won’t see any water spilling from the downspout adapter. This is usually the case when the seal is good. As a result, water could leak out of any seams or elbows on the downspout. When the downspout is filled with water, the gutter would then start to fill up with water and overflow. This can be harmful to your  roofing  and other parts of your home. That’s why you should promptly take action and address the root cause of the problem.

Water Leaks or Damage in the Basement

If your downspout is emptying too close to your home, there’s a chance that water could eventually seep into your basement. Look for signs of water leaks on your basement walls. If you see water damage, make sure that your downspouts and drain are among the things that you investigate.
